A report by payroll software supplier, Sage UK, has revealed that over a third of employees (35%) would leave their current job if the payroll department at their place of work got their pay incorrect just once.
Additionally, it was found that over the last 12 months, almost one in four (22%) of employees had in fact been paid late, that’s despite businesses spending an average of 8.5 hours a month making payments to staff.
Sage UK payroll expert Jonathan Dowden said that payroll is a “lynchpin for talent management and staff retention”, but suggests that despite its importance to overall staff happiness, many payroll departments goes unnoticed; with fellow employees “underestimating the work that goes into ensuring everyone is paid.”
Finally, in reference to the ability of companies to attract new staff, Dowden said, “now is a better time than ever to bring payroll out of the shadows”, and added that it should even be a core business focus.
Improving employee happiness
In addition to payroll matters, another report by Sage One – a subsidiary of Sage UK – revealed there are other – non pay related – factors that could improve employee happiness:
- 44% said office music would improve office life
- 41% wanted flexible working hours
- 40% looked for a sociable workplace
Workers are now as demanding as ever. This requires more than a little effort from HR departments if they are to keep productivity levels high within their business.
